Frequently Asked Questions

Curtain Rod Installed

WIDTH MEASUREMENT –

Measure the width of the curtain rod between the decorative finials (decorative hardware at the end of the pole).  This will give you the finished width of the curtains that you require.

Choose whether you want a single panel or pair of curtains for the pole.

LENGTH MEASUREMENT –

Measure the length from the BOTTOM of the curtain pole to the desired length of the curtains:

Sill Length – It is recommended that you add a minimum + 4” below sill for the finished length.

Mid Length – If a baseboard or electric heater is located below the curtains, it is recommended that the curtain finished length is at least 4” above the heat source.

Full Length – It is recommended that 0.5” is deducted from the finished length so that the curtains are slightly off the floor.

Puddling on Floor Length – To get this look it is recommended that you add 4” – 12” onto the floor length of the curtains, depending how much ‘puddling’ you require.  This style is best kept as a decorative look where the curtains will not be opened or closed.   It is also not recommended for high traffic areas or if you have children or pets, as the curtains will get dirty very quickly.

EXCEPTIONS:  If you are choosing Rod Pocket OR Tab Top Curtains, then you must measure from the TOP of the Curtain Rod.

No Curtain Rod Installed

WIDTH MEASUREMENT –

Measure the width of the window including the outside frame/trim (if installed).

Add the total number of inches on either side of the frame you wish the rod to extend.

NOTE: It is recommended that the finished width of the curtain rod be a minimum of 4”- 8″ longer than either side of the frame and a minimum of 8” – 16” for larger windows.

This will give you the finished width of the curtains that you require.

Choose whether you want a single panel or pair of curtains for the pole.

LENGTH MEASUREMENT –

Measure the length from the top of the window frame/trim to the desired length of the curtains:

Sill Length – It is recommended that you add a minimum + 4” below sill for the finished length.

Mid Length – If a baseboard or electric heater is located below the curtains it is recommended that the curtain finished length is at least 4” above the heat source.

Full Length – It is recommended that 0.5” is deducted from the finished length so that the curtains are slightly off the floor.

This measurement is the distance from the top of the frame/trim to the desired height you wish to mount the BOTTOM of the curtain rod.

EXCEPTIONS:  If you are choosing Rod Pocket OR Tab Top Curtains, then you must measure from the TOP of the Curtain Rod

With a variety of styles, colours, and patterns to choose from, I recommend a professional consultation to determine what best suits your space, needs, and budget. Below are some illustrations of the more popular curtain and drapery headings.

Single Pleat – A modern clean style offering a tailored finish with less fullness than other pleat options.  An ideal option if you’re looking for a minimalist look, or when space at the side of the frame is limited.

Back Tab or Tab Back – A tailored style where the rod slips through the back tabs of the header to create a crisp clean look.

Double Pleat – A contemporary style for a smart tailored finish. The elegant pleats stack efficiently from top to bottom.

Tab Top – This style features a number of fabric tabs that help showcase a decorative curtain rod.

Triple Pleat – This is a traditional style for a more formal finish. Similar to a double pleat, but using more fabric to achieve a classic look.

Rod Pocket – A soft, classic style where the rod is slipped through the panels allowing the fabric to gather together. This simple decorative style is not necessarily suited for curtains that are often opened and closed.

Euro or French Pleat – A predominant style choice amongst many designers, this tailored pleat is pinched at the top of the curtain, allowing the fabric to cascade beautifully to the floor.

Goblet Pleat – A sumptuous and traditional decorative style that adds a sense of formality.

Ripplefold – A modern, simple style that has continuous and consistently placed pleats spanning the width of the curtain. A special snap tape is sewn into the heading and requires a rod with spacing carriers.

Interior Design and custom window treatments Alberta

Flat Panel – The simplest of all designs, it does not have any pleats, has minimum fullness when closed and uses the least fabric of all the header styles.  It is usually hung from a pole with rings and clips and is a great option for an informal and functional finished look.

Curtain fullness is determined by the total width of the track or rod by the amount of fabric used in the curtain heading.  Different headings require different fullness ratios, depending on which style of curtains are chosen, which will also affect the final price.

Fullness can sometimes be adjusted to fit a projects budget, final use or design of the curtains.

As an example: Your curtain rod is 50” wide and you would like double pleat curtains, which are 2.0 fullness, you would therefore require 50” x 2.0 = 100” finished width of fabric to cover the the rod/pole.

RECOMMENDED AMOUNT OF FABRIC FULLNESS TO USE FOR EACH STYLE OF CURTAINS:

Our large fabric selection is extremely varied; choices include, but are not limited to: natural linen, cotton, polyester, silk, bamboo, and poly/cotton blends.

I have hundreds of fabric books at my disposal and access to pretty much any fabric available. If you have a specific fabric or designer in mind, let me know.

I recommend that the fabric be dry cleaned only. Although some fabrics are washable, if your window treatments are lined or interlined, the fabric may have a different shrinkage rate than the lining. To remove surface dust, it is recommended that most window treatments be regularly vacuumed with a suitable attachment. Please also refer to the manufacturers’ cleaning guidelines.

Unlike ready-made drapes and curtains, the choice of fabrics, styles, and size variations for custom curtains is unlimited. With the help of an experienced designer that specializes in window treatments and soft furnishings, you can achieve the exact look and style you want. Custom curtains are also typically far superior in fabric quality.

Yes you can.  Sheer fabric will filter light without blocking it and won’t disturb your view.  Alternately, adding a lining to curtain fabric will block more daylight and the view and blackout lining will completely block both. When it comes to lining options, I can guide you through the selection so you can achieve the lighting effect that best suits your needs.

Most manufacturers and suppliers offer a selection of fire-retardant fabrics and linings. These are commonly used in commercial settings, like hotels, but may also be used in your home. When ordering, please specify if you require your fabric to be fire-retardant.

I recommend you use as much or as little colour as you feel comfortable with. Do you want your window treatments to complement or contrast with the existing furniture, flooring and wall colours? How does the light change in the room during the day? I am here to help guide you through the process and make sure your vision comes to life.

This will depend greatly on the size of the window and the style and fabric that you choose. Typically the cost will range from $500 to $1500 per window, but this is only a general estimate. As there is a wide range of price points, I assist you in understanding the choices that fit with what you want to achieve and are within your price range. Once your needs are established, I always provide a detailed quote.

Normally around 4 weeks from the time of delivery of all materials to the workroom.

The many variations in style, fabric and colour—as well as different window and room sizes—mean that the best service I can offer my clients for these window treatments are my custom design services. When it comes to curtains, it’s important for me to work with you and consider all details to achieve the best results.

Choosing custom window treatments is not the same as buying curtains in a store. Once the fabric has been ordered from the manufacturer and cut from the bolt, I am unable to cancel or return the fabric. For some custom services I can however offer sample swatches.
